Having just returned from Princeton, IL and the funeral of Richard Peterson, I felt compelled to drop you a quick note.

I firmly believe that life is for the living. I loved Richard and will know Mary Peterson like she is of my own family for the remainder of life. It has been a privilege to know them both. They are the epitome of good Midwestern people and it was sincerely sad that their love affair of 41 years came to an end. Richard was dealt an unfortunate hand of cards with his diagnosis and then his death. It is upsetting, but I am a realist in knowing that good things happen to even good people in this world.

Although I know you visited with them the last week of his life during a visit to your office, I wanted to tell you that Richard really enjoyed knowing you and felt most comfortable with having you as his oncologist. In the two years that I knew him, when he was healthy and buzzing about Las Vegas eating catfish and drinking wheat beer at the Hushpuppy or during the quite moments I experienced bedside with him near the end of his life, he spoke of you often and with a sense of pride. They appreciated your thoughtful caring way, your brilliant mind and your delicate balancing act of their hope and faith. Despite knowing that his ultimate outcome would not be favorable, you provided them the best possible scenario for the last two years of his life and they were forever grateful to know you were at the helm of their ship.

You touch countless lives in the nature of your profession and I have seen thousands of patients walk through the doors at NVCI. Somehow Richard and Mary were more special to me, more thoughtful, more meaningful. I know many people felt this same way. I just wanted to thank you from them and from me for all the special care and attention you provided them. Richard was honored to have known you.
